Friedman’s enlightened autocrats: Truth and consequences

china

Recall Thomas Friedman’s renunciation of democracy as “worse” than the “reasonably enlightened group of people” who make up China’s ruling class.  His particular peeve was environmental.  Autocrats, he opinionated, could cut through the messy democratic process and get things done.

It is not an accident that China is committed to overtaking us in electric cars, solar power, energy efficiency, batteries, nuclear power and wind power. China’s leaders understand that in a world of exploding populations and rising emerging-market middle classes, demand for clean power and energy efficiency is going to soar.

This is the green version of making the trains run on time.  Here, via Instapundit, is a photographic tour of Chinese industrial regions, which the country’s enlightened despots somehow appear to have overlooked in their clean energy campaign.

No comment can do these images justice.  They are horrific, but must be looked at, because they are the true consequence of despotism, however enlightened or technically savvy the despots.
